We read the book Because of Winn Dixie at the beginning of the year. We learned about character traits and created this anchor chart.
Then the students created posters about the main character Opal. On this poster they included Opal's character traits and predicted what they thought Opal might do beyond this book.

Every Thursday morning the 4/5 graders go to the 4K room and listen to them read their letter books and then the 4/5 graders read a few books to the 4K kids. Here are a few pictures of one of these recent mornings.
Character Traits will be our very first skill for reading. We will be reading some very fun and interesting children's books. We will learn about flat and round characters, types of conflicts between characters, and how authors use emotions to develop the characters.
The 4th and 5th graders have each set a reading goal for themselves. Some of the children have very lofty goals. Some have set goals of being able to read 50 books this year, while others have said they will try to read 25 books by the end of the year. Make sure to ask your kiddos what they have set as a reading goal for themselves. My goal for them is to have them love to read. My motto has always been, "Read, Read, Read and then Read some more!" The more the children read the better students they become and not just for today but for a lifetime. You can help your children reach their goals by setting an example for them. Let them see you reading! Have a period of time(15-20 minutes at least) every night or every other night set aside where everyone in the family is reading. You can even read to your children. They love to be read to. I promise you it will be time well spent. They will know that you think reading is important and best of all they will know you chose time with them over everything else.
